Abstract
The compressive strength of Megalopolis (Greece) earthy lignite has been investigated by triaxial (ClU) and unconfined compression tests. This lignite is a preconsolidated earthy material behaving simllarly to clayey soils, following the Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion. It has been found that the concept of normalized stresses defined for clays, holds good also for the investigated lignite. With unconfined compression tests the effect of the rate of load application and the anisotropy of the material have been also investigated. The strength increases exponentially with the rate of load application while an elliptical variation law for the undrained shear strength, with respect to the direction of the sample axis, can be accepted.
