Abstract
Rock masses are discontinuous, heterogeneous, and often anisotropic media. Their behaviour depends as much on the rock matrix as on the discontinuities, both initially present in the rock mass or created during their evolution under any given perturbation. The resulting complex mechanics are difficult to predict without the help of continuous and/or discontinuous numerical models.
