Abstract
This article looks into the role of the degree of water saturation in the estimation of liquefaction potential of soils. The main objective is to develop a robust modelling methodology for the cyclic behaviour of quasi-saturated soils. This type of soil, commonly found near the water table and in soils containing significant quantities of organic matter, display considerably greater resistance to liquefaction than fully saturated soils, while still remaining liquefiable. Therefore, adopting saturated and undrained hypotheses when modelling their behaviour can be highly penalising. Meanwhile, modelling them as dry soils would be unsafe. Two modelling strategies are discussed here. The first, employing an advanced constitutive model designed for modelling liquefaction is shown to struggle with accounting for any uncertainty in constitutive parameters, implying it is ill suited to geotechnical engineering. A second methodology based on more empirical constitutive equations is then proposed and is shown to give satisfying results. Finally, this modelling exercise is used to discuss the importance of estimating the water content of soils in engineering projects, especially when aiming to optimise the evaluation of soil liquefaction potential.
